Animal nutrition, a strong lever for the decarbonisation of livestock farming

Animal nutrition, a strong lever for the decarbonisation of livestock farming
Climate change is today a major challenge for all economic sectors. Although livestock farming emits greenhouse gases, there are levers for reducing them. Taking action on animal feed, which accounts for up to 70% of the carbon impact of animal sectors, is therefore a priority, which the Agricultural Cooperation has decided to tackle head-on.

Between 60 and 70% of the carbon impact of the animal sector comes from animal feed. And within this diet, 80% of the carbon impact is related to raw materials.

Local proteins and soya zero deforestation :

To achieve this, LCA Animal Nutrition has identified two levers for action. Firstly, the development of local plant proteins. This implies setting up a real strategy combining research and development, the implementation of processing tools and structuring the sectors. Secondly, by favouring "zero imported deforestation" soya.

Valuing the extra cost in carbon credits :

Nevertheless, this orientation will inevitably lead to an increase in the cost of feed in the order of 20 to 70 million euros, estimates LCA Nutrition animale. "Our animal sectors will not be able to withstand this, nor will the consumer, not to mention the fact that the competitiveness of our sectors is important," explains Frédéric Monnier.

LCA is also working on the development of an economic model promoting decarbonation. A tudy has been launched to know how to build partnerships and enhance efforts around carbon credits (results are expected in the first half of 2021). "It is necessary to find an economic model that takes into account the stakes of society and competitiveness", insists Jean-Luc Cades, President of LCA nutrition animale, who specifies that this "voluntarist approach" wants to be "realistic on the economic level". In spite of the concerns of the present, it is a question of "building and perpetuating the future of the animal sectors," he concludes.
